Qualification Description

The Higher Certificate in Information Technology in Information Systems prepares you for work in any area of information technology in any business. It is also a very good stepping-stone for those of you who do not meet the entry requirements for a degree but wish to gain entry to the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology  after completing this qualification.

The higher certificate overs the fundamental areas of information technology to ensure you gain a broad understanding of, and more intense practical experience in, computer systems, information systems, programming, database design and management, networking technologies, visual programming and the use of a variety of computer applications. You also cover subject areas such as academic English, mathematics for information technology, human-computer interaction and personal skills development, to ensure you gain a balance of theoretical, technical and practical skills.

Because of our unique teaching and learning approaches, you will also start developing essential skills for the world of work, such as analysing and solving real problems, exploring new ideas, being adaptable, working in teams and communicating effectively.

If you like the thought of figuring out how computers work and how you can design systems with the end-user in mind, the Higher Certificate in IT (IS) gives you an excellent understanding, as well as practical and technical skills, in the fundamentals of computer hardware and software, information systems and programming.

Admission requirements

  • You need a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) for diploma or certificate purposes.

Or

  • If you have an international school-leaving certificate, you need to qualify for matric exemption from the Matriculation Board. CTI will forward all exemption applications, on your behalf, to the Board for evaluation.

And

  • You must have obtained the required results in the CTI Placement Assessment.

We use a blend of face-to-face Lecture-Based Learning (LBL) and Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL).
Our teaching staff is a mix of full-time academics and working professionals to ensure you benefit from quality academic and industry specific inputs.
You have access to campus resource centres, computer labs and WiFi.
You will be assessed on your broad theoretical understanding of core IT subject areas. You will also have to demonstrate specialised practical application of knowledge within these subjects, such as configuring networks, basic programming, use of computer applications and formatting data. This approach ensures relevant industry experience and further prepares you for the world of work.
